In the eld of family art therapy the family mural drawing is, in my opinion, a most impressive technique: Not only does it provide the mental health professional with a visual reference of a family s coping strategies and individual ego defenses, but it also illuminates the interpersonal, as well as the intrapsychic, aspects of the here-and-now relationship. Jay Haley (1976) speaks of a family system in which sequences of behavior are often elaborately performed and therefore overlooked by therapists because our cognitive attention spans seem to have dif culty with such sequences (p. 112). The technique of the family mural drawing (as it will be called for the purposes of this book) exists in many variations. One popular procedure is the collaborative drawing technique (Smith, 1985). Often used in the initial sessions with a family, it is a structured nonverbal art task in which each family member takes consecutive turns drawing on a sheet of 12" 18" paper with crayons. As each member completes his or her drawing, the time limit for each turn is gradually reduced from 30 seconds to 3 seconds, thereby increasing the task s intensity.

Procedure (a) To use as feeder cells, resuspend cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (CB-MSCs) at 5 104 cells/mL in MSC culture medium (see Protocol 7.13 to obtain cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells).
